mscomctl.ocx should be distributed by microsoft with all operating systems since windows 2000. I would suggest that you search your computer for this file. If found, try putting a duplicate copy in the same folder as sqlcop.exe. If you cannot find this file on your computer, it should be easy to find on the internet for download and install.

MSCOMCTL.OCX is part of the "Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Common Controls".
i already try to install the controls (ger/eng) and also try to copy the ocx to the exe.
same error as before.

I would suggest that you log in as administrator, and then install the common controls from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... laylang=en

give it another try, no change.
to install as admin was my first try but i hardly believe that sqlcop use vb6.
nobody wants 12 year old milk ;)
btw i also installed visual studio 2010 premium with all options and dependencys.

under win2008 [edit] standard, it works...
and copy&past the mscomctl.ocx from 2008 to 7 don't fix the problem (appdir&system32).

This sounds like your desktop. UAC or some such problem that is preventing the supporting OS level files from functioning correctly. Your test on Windows Server 2008 working also supports that.

As for the 12 year old milk comment: The tool works and works very well at an extremely high and mobile level. Experienced developers and database professionals alike will say the same; creating a tool such as SQLCop that is utilizing OS level (server and desktop) supporting files that are supported presently and backward compatible in *almost* every OS build released is a true success.

Anyone will take 12 year old milk if it means you get stability and functionality out of it.

I tried to install SQLCop and got this error, too. In case anyone else runs into it, here's how I fixed it.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
SQL Server Management Studio 2012

I downloaded and tried to right-click > Run as administrator. Didn't work.
I downloaded and installed. the file suggested by George. Still didn't work.
I tried to copy the sqlcop.exe and MSCOMCTL.OCX files to C:\Program Files. Didn't work.
I copied the sqlcop.exe and MSCOMCTL.OCX files to C:\Program Files (x86). Didn't work.
I right-clicked and ran as administrator. It worked.

Off to check my databases now...
Why why why why why why WHY?

What is the difference between these two?

I downloaded and tried to right-click > Run as administrator. Didn't work.

I right-clicked and ran as administrator. It worked.

Ahh, I see what you're asking. At first, it didn't work when I did a right-click and run as admin from my Downloads folder. The right-click and run as admin only worked after it was in the Program Files (x86) folder.

SQL Server Express 2012 x64
Windows 7 x64

I had a problem with missing MSCOMCTL.OCX but adding the file to the same folder as SQLCop solved it. However, running as administrator or plain, the left hand side menu does nothing. The top menu works and instance and databases are detected.

I deleted the config and the XML file, just in case and ran again. Can anyone think what I have missed?

Yes, the XML files doesn't have any SQL Server 2012 sections, you can open it up and add

  1. <version>SQL11</version>

for example
  1. <versions>
  2.   <version>SQL2000</version>
  3.   <version>SQL2005</version>
  4.   <version>SQL2008</version>
  5.   <version>SQL11</version>
  6. </versions>

Thanks for replying Denis. I've been super busy lately. As soon as I get a chance to breathe a little, I'll update SQLCop.

Great, thanks. Here is the xml file with the line filled in at every place I could find:
sqlcop.xml

BTW, it works fine in a data directory on my set-up without running as admin.
