Do they still teach sorting in schools

Postby SQLDenis on Fri Sep 11, 2009 6:30 pm

Just wondering if schools/colleges still make you do quick sort and bubble sort etc etc in class

Is there even still a point since every language these days has a Sort method/routine/function built in

I guess it is good to know these things so that you know how the computer 'thinks'

same thing could be said for binary

do you really need to know what this is 00101001? Hex I can see being more useful

what do you think will students in the future learn more design/frameworks and less low level coding?

yes they all do. great way to teach loops. And understand sorting.

Of course they also teach bad programming techniques.

this is a little piece of code I got from a sturent that is in her last year for her bachelor in chemistry.

not the exact code doing this from memory but close enough.

  1. #include <stdio.h>
  2.
  3. void main
  4. {
  5.   int i,n;
  6.   printf("loop n times:");
  7.   scanf("%d",&n);
  8.   i = 0;
  9. loop:
  10.   if(i  > n) goto end;
  11.     printf("i: %d",i);
  12.     i = i+1;
  13.     goto loop;
  14. end:
  15.   printf("the end");
  16. }

ANd then we wonder where all these bad programs come from. I was shocked.

It official. C++ is just as bad (if not worse) than VB6!

I just graduated last year from Computer Science department in one of the Universities in HK. They taught bubble sort first, then binary search, quick sort, etc. They didn't go deeply for them, but one of the professors require us to demonstrate the flow of quick sort in graphs.
