Best Language to Learn Computer Programming

Postby damber on Tue Jun 30, 2009 3:06 pm

Found this link: http://www.ariel.com.au/a/teaching-programming.html

Question to everyone is.. what language (or maybe combination of languages) would you consider to be the best for teaching computer programming? How did you learn to program? Did it help you, or hinder you?

I started with Basic which is not something you wanna do when you want to become a professional programmer. YOu should learn something C-ish like C# or Java.

If I had to choose, I'd probably pick python. The syntax is pretty natural most of the time, and there's a pretty nice command line interpreter (no sense fussing with compilers and all that if you're just a kid getting started). Once they start to get familiar with that I'd introduce SQL, and then move to a compiled language.

Aside from BASIC in grade school, I'd suppose it went something like SQL -> VBScript -> VB6/A -> whatever it is I do now.

wow 19 minutes for the Java thing and he is doing Java for 2 years?

easiest would be something that didn't require classes to learn about operators and arrays etc etc first (like making a value minus if it is plus and vice versa)
after that you can learn about inheritance, polymorphism etc etc by using classes

I started with Pascal. I think any procedural language is a good place to start because it gives some good fundamentals (variables, simple constructs like loops, tec) that can all then be re-used when you start delving into OO languages. Plus it makes people realize how complex graphical applications must be after you spend a year ior two writing console or simple line drawing applications :)

Haha what Chopstik said.

I don't like BASIC but its a matter of opinion and my opinion is that coding is about "belts and braces" and unfortunately for me BASIC is like walking around in your underwear with a belt on (which is probably appealing to some people...points at Chrissie1).

Pascal was my choice, halfway between being annoying and amazing I enjoyed it a lot and it eventually led me to the old legend Delphi and incidently PHP (because the look and feel of the code syntax and semantics is/was similar).

I was also fairly comfortable with C as well so I obviously inclinded in that direction and this led me to C# (and I haven't looked back).

I always believed that if you were good at SQL and didn't know coding then you should progress on to something like VB.NET as the two are very similar (visually) but I recently read somewhere (CodingHorror I think) that you should learn another language, programming language as it can greatly improve your primary coding language skills and changes your perception.

I can relate to the above, I started swearing a lot more and I have found after a lengthy tirade of foul mouthed expletives I am much more productive and/or satisfied that I am no longer annoyed about whatever it was that was annoying me.

Where to start in case of learning Syntax. I have tiny idea about this. Can you share about this program. I am too much interested.
