Software Developers Should Never Have Dress Codes

Postby SQLDenis on Sat Aug 22, 2009 4:35 pm

On Saturday, I visited my dry cleaner. [1] Normally this wouldn't be a particularly momentous occasion [2], except that it was the first time in three weeks that I had gone. Up until the end of August, I had to make sure that like clockwork, at least every 2 weeks my Better Half or I made the trek to the dry cleaners, to make sure that I had suitable attire for my Cash Money Day Job. But it hit me on Saturday that this was a thing of the past: I no longer work for a company foolish enough to have a dress code for its technical staff.

Re: Software Developers Should Never Have Dress Codes

I was happy with dress code at my previous job; work casual. Most days I wore khakis and a polo and friday most people wore jeans. There was no requirement around it (other than the ones for going out on the production floor) but it felt somewhat professional. The current job has no rules and I got a lot of comments about 'dressing up' and 'conforming' when I showed up in a pair of slacks and a polo. Mostly people wear jeans or shorts, t-shirts to the occasional polo, and sandals and sneakers.
I've never been a fan of dress codes, especially anything that would get in the way of the job (for instance, dry-clean only slacks for a technician), but it does make me a little uncomfortable when my pizza delivery job had higher dress standards than my development job.

Um, yeah...I'm going to need you to come in on Saturday -- Bill Lumbergh, Office Space

I have to wear a suit and tie. I don't really like it, but I got a 10k/yr increase for it, plus more than that since starting.

if someone came tome and said I will give you 10K raise if you start wearing a suit I would say no thanks
I would need a lot more because
A) I would have to buy a bunch of suits, shirts, ties etc etc
B) it is not worth it, 10K is not that much...might even push me over AMT limit and then I would pay more in taxes than that 10K since you can't deduct everything I currently deduct

However I do look awesome in a suit....in a Zoolander kind of way

I don't spend 10k a year on clothes. I spend less than 1k a year on clothes. And my total raise since starting has been much more than 10k. Compared to my previous job where after I left everyone got lowers (instead of raises :D ) I feel like I came out on the better end of the deal.

But you probably had a starting wardrobe to begin with...I don't

However looking at this:
The Dow Jones Industrial Average may get a new name after 113 years, if News Corp. follows through on selling its stock-index business.

The Wall Street Journal, owned by News Corp. since 2007, reported yesterday that the company is exploring a sale of the unit, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. was hired to evaluate deals that may fetch $700 million and prompt a new moniker for the flagship index, the newspaper said. MSCI Inc., a former unit of Morgan Stanley, NYSE Euronext and Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, are potential candidates, according to the Journal.

Interestingly enough, when I worked for a bank (for many years in development positions), I was required to wear a shirt and tie each day. For the last year, we were permitted to wear khakis and polo shirts at the minimum, but were urged to still continue with shirt and tie.

Now, I work for an IT company and wear whatever I want. Most days, it's jeans and t-shirts, with an occasional shirt and tie thrown in for the heck of it... After all, I've got so many cartoon ties, I have to get some use out of them now that they're not required... But it does cause lots of questions when I do... :D

Interview? I didn't say anything about an interview. ;)
