Which link should be broken

Postby SQLDenis on Sun Aug 22, 2010 6:50 pm

Here is an interesting puzzle I found on the internetz

A F# programmer has been contracting for 7 months at a company named Object Link Technology. His manager told him that he would be getting one gold link each month from a gold chain with 7 links. However, he can break only one link at the first month. He cannot break any more links after the first month. which link should he break up in order to be able to get one link each month?

so which one should he break?

Is the programmer allowed to spend his earnings each month? ;-)

Break at number 3 (e.g. keep 4 and 2). I hope the solution then becomes obvious is what he should take each month.

He should, of course, break the link with Object Link Technology before he:

That's exactly what I suggested. I said, the answer is obvious - for me that explanation was obvious.

I think it's obvious because everyone already knows this - it's the same principle as the cutting of a gold bar for payment (or whatever it was that we had in here last year, and the year before that) :-) Hence why traingamer and I alluded to the issue with the employee not being able to spend his earnings each month, which is a practical flaw in this puzzle's logic :-)

So the correct answer is actually to get another job, where they pay real money that you can actually spend.... ;-)

Yes, good point.

I guess it's an old problem and I probably read about it when I was a kid (time when I used to read such math puzzle books), but I forgot the solution since then so I re-solved it again.
