Actually eating 1 Habanero or 5 Habaneros won't make a big difference, it is not the same as alcohol where drinking 1 Long Island Ice Tea or 5 Long Island Ice Teas makes a huge difference
Once you have eaten one you are already numbed for at least 10 minutes, best thing is just to shove all the other ones in your mouth and be done with it

I've never been involved in a hot pepper eating contest (nor do I want to). However....

Peppers are hot because the capsaicin in the peppers attack your taste buds. So, I would think the best approach to eating the most number of peppers would be to cut them in to 'swallow whole' sized pieces. Then, place them skin side down on your tongue and swallow (the piece) whole. This should minimize the capsaicin to tongue contact, allowing you to eat more of them. Of course, this is just a theory, but I certainly wouldn't like to test it.

This may make it easier to 'get them in', but there's nothing I can think of that will help you 'get them out' the next morning.

I should also mention that it is possible to overdose on capsaicin, so I really don't recommend hot pepper eating contests. That would be an awful way to die!

I have no idea how many habanero's you would need to consume in order to overdose on capsaicin. Would 10 Habanero's do it? I don't know, but I sure wouldn't want to find out either.

You know, we used to play Poker and instead of money we used glasses of water. I remember once I lost a pot and had to drink 12 glasses of water. The first 5 are very easy but after that it gets really tough. I think I drank about 30 glasses or so during 3 hours. Needless to say I was up all night going to the bathroom
BTW I believe a friend of mine has this of video tape, this was in 1994, we were snowed in and had no booze in the house so we decided to play this game
